Shipping giant Maersk Tankers is experimenting on the idea of having more cost-effective shipping parts onboard. And what did it think of? A 3D printer!
Shipping costs for ship spare parts is surging, and this has enticed the company to provide a solution to this. It suggested to install a 3D printed on a tanker vessel to allow the crew to ‘print off’ spare parts they need.
“The idea is that we send the blueprint to the crew on board the tanker vessel, they will push ‘print’ and in a matter of hours get the part,” explained Märtha Josefine Rehnberg, a category manager at Maersk Procurement.
